My first car was a 68 OHC Sprint, 3-speed manual, Vedoro Green Firebird coupe.
I was 15, bought at a used car auction in 1973 for $635.00. Drove it home with my learners permit. |

This thread could also be called "cars I wish I hadn't sold":
68 Chevelle 6 cyl 3-spd... $0 in '72 Was a gift from my parents after they made me sell my 50 Chevy. My dad was transferred and his employer wouldn't pay to move my car... they did move the 327 that was going into the 50 coupe and it went into the Chevelle66 Fairlane GT 390 4-spd... $650 in '74 Got a deal because it had a noisy transmission. Replaced the bearing on the input shaft, was good to go.50 Ford pickup with 327 Chevy... $400 in '77 Engine was frozen... had a pinched rod bearing, easy fix. Wife and I still refer to it as Rocket Truck.63 Falcon... $75 in '79 OK, anti-muscle car but was my best deal ever. My new manager knew my salary, felt sorry for me, and gave me his beater. Later sold it to a neighbor under similar empathy rules for $150. |

1973 Bonneville 455
Some of you probably remember the oil embargo late 70's , well around 1979-80 we would chip in as a bunch of friends and buy joy ride barges with 455 (bigger better lol) for $50 or so and drive them to the ground, go as fast as we could (reckless drinking and driving in the country roads or dirt roads... lucky I didn't kill myself or others , sometimes we would put a brick or rock on the gas pedal and blow the engine, another instance we damage the transmission and could only drive on reverse. What bad teens we were, kicking myself. Now some of these beaters are 5000$ + Unbelievable !

68 GTO 4 spd $600 in 1975. Maybe 60K miles. Inflation calculator puts that at $2935 today for a performance car 7 years old. Think I had to put in a clutch and some exhaust work. Equally as cheap as I did the job myself in the service station I was working at the time. After the embargo, I think regular was 49 cents? Premium (with lots of lead!) a little more; not too bad yet.

65 GTO convertible, trippower 4 spd for $300 in 1974 from a Buick dealer. Still in high school. Had 95k miles on it. Never heard of a GTO until my buddy pushed me to buy it. I had 2 six bangers before the goat so this was a huge power increase. Had a lot of fun in that car, raced everyone, finally blew the 389 up after a year of abuse. My buddy bought it off me for $75 and put a Chevy 6, 250 ci in and sold it. Never saw the car again.

1970 1/2 Trans AM, Ram Air III 4-speed, AC, Sandlewood deluxe interior. Bought 2 days after the "Blizzard of 78" in Ohio. Dug it out of 30" of snow. Owner said "$1500.00 cash only, bring your own battery!" Tossed a battery in it, drove it home.

Have bought a lot of cars for under a grand and that includes my Judge (1986ish). Today (well last year) $2500 was pocket change. Market this year has gone nertz but doubt it will last. Have eight at moment evenly distributed from 1970 to 2012. Five are two seaters.. All but one have garage doors. Only have one 4 cyl but it is boosted. All have AC. One is a long roof tow car (have had a tow car since 1972).
Moved to central Florida in 1984 partly because things do not rust here. Had home built with intention of a lot of garage space despite being in development with sidewalks and a HOA. Just takes planning. ps being anchient I remember 22c/gal for premium. Drive all night for a dollar. Those were also days of Ripple, Boones Farm was a step up. pps was recently told that one of my old cars (paid a grand in 1970) sold for a quarter mil. In 1962 I bought my first Pontiac - a 1961 Ventura 2 door hardtop, black with the tri-blue interior, 425A engine w/tri-power, 4 speed Borg-warner transmission and Posi rear, PS and PB. Traded in a 1955 T-bird on price on $1895.00. Car had 12K miles on the odometer. Drove it for a year and rebuilt the transmission twice due to gear breakage. The Borg was not a good transmission back then. But the car would really perform! Sold it back to the dealer to get a down payment to buy our first house in 1963.
Bought 2 new GTOs - a 1967 400 hdtp with 4 speed, etc. - paid $3250 and 1971 455HO w/ 4 speed, etc. for a little over $5K - 4 speed, etc. - brutal car even though they had dropped the compression ratio down into the 8 plus area. Shifting out of 3rd to 4th at 90 mph it would chirp the tires and plant you back into the seat again. Have had many other Pontiacs over the ensuing years and still driving the latest ones - 2008 G8GT, 2009 G8GT and 2009 Solstice GXP. Have fun while you can! My first Pontiac and second car was purchased in 1971, a junior in high school. It was a 1965 GTO convertible with a 389 4V and two speed auto transmission. I would drive it with the top down and heater on high during cold Chicago winters. I paid $600.00 and sold it for $900.00, one of the few times I sold a car for more than I paid.
My first new Pontiac was a 1973 Trans Am, white with a blue bird on the hood.. it had a sticker price of $5097.75, the dealer sold it to me for $4700.00 plus tax and license. |

I bought my brother in law's 67 GTO hdtp for $100 in 1975. He got it new for a hs graduation present. I drove it 180 miles home. Then parted it out for $600. It wasn't that bad of shape at all. Also 2 years later looked at a nice Hemi Cuda for $1800. I was enroute to go to college. Those were the days!

Not sure what happened with my post from years ago here.
Maybe the wrong thread. I bought my 64 GTO from by Uncle (Pontiac Dealer) as a used Zone "Brass Hat" car. 1964 GTO 4 speed, Tri-Power, 3.90 gear, Convertible Power Antenna, and a whole crap load of other options. G-Red and white top. Tom V.

Bought my 70 gto in 86 for 1500.00,,all original drive train ,,had 39000 actual miles. 455 4 speed with 3.31 posi 12 bolt. Recently painted it back to its original mint turquoise and the original 69 judge stripes. The 2 cars I wish i bought was a very nice original paint 69 judge in 1982 for 1500.00,,didnt buy it because the starter would sometimes not work correctly. And a mint 69 shelby GT500,,,red with black interior,,,auto 428. If I remember correctly he wanted like 7k which I just didnt have. Many more I wish I hadnt passed on but those stick out the most.
Got in contact with the original owner in 86 and she sent me a pic of the car when it was new,,,its in my sig. With some digging I found her name again and contacted her about a week ago. Let her know I just restored the car back to factory color and sent her a pic of it and a copy of the original pic she sent me. Shes now 70 years old and was excited to see the pics,,told me her father signed for her on high school graduation day at 17 years old for the brand new gto at a local pontiac dealership. I guess she got in trouble and around 2 years later he made her trade it in on a beetle.

Back in 1984 at the ripe old age of 15. Bought a 67 LeMans 2 door HT. 3 different colors of paint and/or primer. Rear sat lower than the front from worn out springs. But it was complete, original and ran and drove home. $500. All the rage at that time were 68 and up Chevelles. Always preferred the 65-67 LeMans body style myself and they were fairly cheap back then.

Here's a weird one. In 1985-86 I bought a 66 Catalina 9 passenger station wagon from a Toyota Dealer used car lot. They had just taken it in on trade for a Camry from the original owner! Now ready for this? It was a 421 HO Auto trans, power windows, tilt, Barrier Blue/Blue interior. In great shape, all numbers matching. Bought for $700.00. They had NO IDEA the tri-power and the three little air cleaners were stock stuff. I kept the car 19 years and drove it allot. Great car.

I have already mentioned my first Pontiac a 65 GTO convertible and my first new Pontiac a 1973 Trans Am.
Some time in 1973 my best friend had a neighbor who owned a grocery store. They had a 1967 Catalina wagon used as a delivery vehicle. The car quit running and the owner was told it needed an engine. Together with three other friends we bought the car for a dollar. Within a couple days I towed it to the transmission shop where I worked and replaced the bad timing chain and gears. A couple of days later my best friend drove it back to his house. His neighbor, the original owner was upset to see the car running, and even more upset when he heard it didn’t need an engine. One of the guys in the group nick named the car Dragon Wagon. Not because it was fast but the rear bumper was so low to the ground it was almost dragging. The car was scary to drive, the front suspension was so worn the car would almost move to the right a full lane when you stepped on the gas and back to the left when you hit the brakes. The left motor mount was broken and often when the engine would torque over it would disengage the accelerator linkage. We would have a driver hood the brake while in gear, I would grab the carb linkage making the engine torque over while realigning the carb linkage bell crank, release the carb and everything would settle back into place. We kept it three or four months using it to hall around car parts. We never got plates or insurance and one of the guys was in the habit of using it to do lawn jobs. Between the four of us there were a lot of hi-jinx and stupid things I won’t talk about. We sold it for $200 and probably had less than $50 invested in parts. |
