they came with different mfg's that said the mfg name and then on the 180 side it said steel belted radial in white letters.
my 76 I bought new came with either 3 good years and 1 uniroyal or the other way around. (been so long I cant remember without digging out pics). the tires were absolutely identical from the tread down to the fine print info letters. just the mfg name was different. |

This is an April 76 car and the owner says BF Goodrich but I wanted to know for sure. If they were TA radials, what was the correct font of the letter? Can you still get them? Do they make the Tiger Paws or any of the correct tires for them?

https://www.universaltire.com/225-70...large-rwl.html BFG T/A Radials were never factory installed on any 1970s Trans Am - or any other American Musclecar of the era - other than a Canadian-built Bricklin. You really need either GoodYear or Uniroyal Steel Belted Radials - see pictures here from original brochures below |

As noted, the 1976 Trans Am was equipped with a GR70-15 radial tire that was constructed to GM's own specification. The "corporate" tire production was contracted to at least (4) manufacturers during the '76 model year. Those were B.F. Goodrich, Goodyear, Uniroyal, and Firestone.
A former GM engineer I spoke with confirmed that while all of the "corporate" tires were constructed to the same specification and had to meet minimum performance requirements, each company used their own rubber compounds, which made some otherwise-identical tires better than others. The term "performance" included ride quality, wet and dry handling, mileage/service life, and resistance to damage. For anyone seeking the GR70-15 Steel Belted Radial, Kelsey Tire reproduces the correct Goodyear version with raised white letters. This tire would be considered correct for 1975 to 1977 (and non-WS6 1978) Trans Ams and some Formulas, too. http://www.kelseytire.com/pages/preformancetires4.html |

Here's a pic of my 76 Firebird Esprit that came with some Goodyear Steel Belted Radial that can just be made out in the snow.
