In a documentary about the Monkee's, back in the day, he had brought "something" back in his luggage from a trip to Mexico.....this allowed him the privilege to spend, I think 6 months at the federal prison that is on the outskirts of the town I live in today!
I forgot to mention the prison Peter Tork was in for a while....The first 2-3 seasons of Street Outlaws was filmed on Route 66 in front of the prison...IABC's

Loved the show and the band in the 1960's as a kid. Still loved the music all along, and have most of their albums on vinyl, from back in the day. Truly a reflection of the times back then. There's even an article somewhere of Mike Nesmith getting clocked and busted for doing 126 mph on an LA freeway in his new '66 GTO. Good times. RIP.

I was a production consultant on the Monkee's Reunion Special, which aired in 1997. I supplied them with the original Monkeemobile and arranged for its transport, etc. I was also an extra in the dance sequence toward the end of the show, along with my former wife. I got to meet all of them and spend a little time with them. I will say this: Davy Jones was a really nice person.

I must say David Jones from here on these forums is really nice too. And I always refer to him as Davey.

As a kid playing rock music, it wasn't cool to be Monkees Fan back in the day but I enjoyed the show and the music anyway. "Last Train to Clarksville" was always one of my favorites. As a lover of Gretsch guitars (which the Monkees "played". all these years I thought of that tune as the Gretsch signature sound. I came across this vid of the studio musician who played lead guitar on the recording and damned if it wasn't a Fender Telecaster guitar.

Thanks for that video link. I really enjoy the inside info on how these hits were made even though I have no musical training . Ever since my wife and I watched the documentary, "The Wrecking Crew", I have taken a real interest in this stuff.

Look at the:
Grilles
Hood ornament
Blower color
Tires (Blue Streaks are out there)
Wheel center caps
Wiper arms
Pinstripe
Emblems

And that only took a glance.

The Norris Family MM is by far as close to original with MINOR liberties taken, but considering it was dumped/seized, Painted Pink and used as a Hotel Shuttle I think I can overlook these MINOR details.

What I found cool was that all these years & abuse, the car still retained one of Dean Jeffries water slide crest decals in the glove box, Way Cool (to me)

Now the Barris' MM, That is an outright abomination!

But this isn't about the cars so I'll move on.
Cheers.

So does anyone know for certain there is only one copy out there (the Barris version)? Just wondering because I've seen at least one version at auto shows and then a different version which I believe was the Barris version at the Volo Auto museum many years back - that version looked liked it tried hard but fell short of the original. Just wondering if in fact there I did not see another copy at the auto shows.

There Are Seven Monkeemobiles True Facts
There are six Monkeemobiles, but only two were
used in the Monkees, which were designed by this
man: Dean Jeffries. Dick Dean helped Jeffries, build
both cars, in George Barris shop. Dean Jeffries also,
designed both Black Beauties for Green Hornet, and
Dick Dean, also helped him build both Cars, also in
George Barris shop.
The third Monkeemobile was not a 1966 Pontiac
GTO, but a 1966 Pontiac Catalina, without the right,
of Dean Jeffries, and after George Barris bought #2

Monkeemobile. Dick Dean built number #3.
and The Monkeemobile #4 was built by Dean too.
George Barris commission #4 to be built for AMT, so
a Monkeemobile would be released to the public in '99.
The Monkeemobile #4 had thin redlines, and thinner
Craigar SS Diamond Spoke Mags, and regular fifteens
in the rear. This was the fourth Monkeemobile and it
also had yellow orange between the headlights, and
taillight shells. This was also a 1966 Pontiac GTO, which
sold to a man in Florida, through Mecum Auctions.
The fifth Monkeemobile designed by Dean Jeffries, but
using a 1967 Pontiac GTO, designed for The Monkees
Forty-Fifth Anniversary Tour. It sold on eBay for
$60,000.
Also many keep writing saying The Monkeemobile #2
sold for $500,000. This is a big lie. The Altered car called
The Monkeemobile #2 sold through Barrett-Jackson for
$360,000 to a comedian in Michigan.
There is now a number #6 Monkeemobile, but has a huge
working blower, two carbs, and a competition scoop. The back
is longer, but it has a different back, shows round lights in the
taillights, the rear lenses are different. He wants over a
$100,000 for the number #6 car, It even has the wrong seat
design, even though they newly upholstered. The Cooper tires
look too rounded, and it uses American Torque Thrust Mags.
It does have the gold Monkees logo on the doors, but it's car
Pontiac bucket seats, look stock. They do not look, like Jeffries.
I now found a seventh Monkeemobile,it is done from the
view of George Barris, with yellowed front grill, and oval light
rings, but the lights in the front, look like there painted red.
The blower is grey in color, and the three injector scoop does
not look exactly like The Monkeemobiles scoop. The glass type
mirrors are tinted yellow. The interior does look tan, with the
correct style as Dean Jeffries Monkeemobiles were.It has good
Craigar SS Diamond Spoked Mags, and good tires to match.

Wow, interesting and for me, depressing all at the same time. Its sad for me to see that like the iconic Batmobile, there are several clones of the Monkeemobile. Some of which, again like the Batmobile, are horribly done. I also find it funny that the Carlisle one is claimed to be #1 but when you put your cursor over the photo it shows #2 and has "GTO" emblems on the fenders, not "6.5 Litre" emblems.

Very interesting reads though. Thanks for those links Stuart.

You are right. People want that tangible link to the past and feel the need to own it. There is a company in Dayton, OH that builds the Batmobile replicas. Both the TV and first movie versions. They have standing orders for over 30 vehicles. Each between 100-125K a copy. There is money in nostalgia.
