Default 64 GTO Steering Column Firewall Cover

Need some help identifying the correct steering column firewall cover for a 64 GTO/Lemans/Tempest, hopefully from someone with an original car. My 64 is PHS documented and I’ve had it since 1969. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize what I had at the time and the car has gone through a number of “current trend” mods.

According the GTO Restoration Guide the covers (two minor style variations) were ribbed however…”a third style, un-ribbed, was also known to exist.” I’ve attached some pics-they are generic as my covers are packed away but they are like what I have. As for the ribbed cover, I don’t remember if that is the original or one I picked up at a salvage yard ages ago. I bought a non-ribbed cover off E-Bay thinking that may be correct, however that style seems to be rare and maybe used for only a short time. My car was built the third week of June at the Pontiac plant. Has anybody seen the non-ribbed used? What do you guys have? Thanks………………

All the 64's I've seen have the unribbed version. Have one if you need it.

The 8000 mile survivor car which has been detailed in the magazines (Pontiac Plant, 3rd week of May - If I recall correctly) has the ribbed design.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies--

Bob, I have an unribbed from E-Bay just not sure if going to use--seems like usage was kind of hit or miss depending on plant or what was available.

1-Wild_Cat- do have the details of the magazine name, on line, pics, etc?

I don't have a magazine reference - although I think it was in HPP. And Muscle Car Review. It is a great story - One owner, 8K miles, Tripower - 4 spd - etc.

The current owner (I guess) has left many photos on Flickr. Here is a link: www.flickr.com/photos/134996339@N04/sets/72157655423885673/with/20255783984/

In those photos there is an under dash shot that show the part you are talking about. Probably one of the trim tag too (in case my build date memory is faulty).

Cat,
Thanks for the link. A lot of good reference pics. That car was built at the Pontiac plant one month before mine (my car also sold in Chicago) so it looks like the ribbed cover was used, at least late in the model year run at the Pontiac plant.

No trouble. I really should find out who the photos/car belongs to and send them a thank you note. So nice of them to have them up and in a public area.

I use them on my on going project too...My GTO rolled out of the Pontiac plant about a month after yours (July 28).
