Steering column rebuild and modification on a 77 Trans am
I want to rebuild my studying column because I have it out of the car. I do not have it apart, but I know there are 6000 little pieces in them. I've looked around and never been able to find a rebuild kit for these 2nd gen steering columns, but I thought I'd do one last check. I am also interested in any other mods people have done to these columns to beef them up or make them more robust for autocrossing. I have seen them cut off and had u joints put in bit I thought that was mainly to get the shaft around headers. Here's an example of what I mean on the year one bandit. So, anyone know of a rebuild kit?

There is nothing you need to do to make them better. You can put new bearings in but that is about it. They are good columns. If you don't have any problems now don't worry about it.

I have a tilt column out of a 74 ta and want to put it into my 79. I know the wiring is different as is the output shaft. but my problem is the shaft that holds the steering wheel has a good bit of play in it. the bearings are still intact what else should I look for?

There are 3 torx or inverted torx bolts for the upper bearing housing support that commonly loosen up. You will have to remove the steering wheel, lock plate, and turn signal switch for access,

There are 4 torx bolts/screws...requires E9 socket.
