1972 Idle Solenoid Bracket Finish
What's the correct finish for a 1972 idle solenoid bracket? Bare steel, gold cad, silver cad, gray or black phosphate? I have two votes already for gold cad from F'Bruce and Pepi. Below from left to right is a NOS solenoid with a silver cad bracket from Inline, an original bracket and solenoid refinished with bare steel paint, and the one that was on the Black Car when it arrived.
I am getting ready to ship a bunch of stuff off for plating and want to get it right. Thanks for any help. |

Just to clarify, when I mentioned mine was gold cad, mine is a 73.

i just sold one a real survivor piece and it was gold too..it was a 72
cant trust NOS to be right...by now most NOS is service pieces that some how survived.. ive pulled parts out of the string tie boxes and they where diff colors..so be aware.

Bob, I'm darned near 100% certain the the OEM finish on those brackets was a grey phosphate.
That said, when I'm 100% certain I'm usually proven wrong!

FWIW - here is a photo I took of the OEM bracket on my '72 Formula 400, prior to disassembly. Appears to me to be gray (or faded black) phosphate?

The bracket on the assembly line 1972 WM Code 455 HO pictured on the 455HO website sure looks to me like its dark gray or black too. Sorry, but I'm not smart enough to attach it.

Just when I thought there was consensus....
It would be nice to see that picture. Maybe this was like other things where there were multiple correct answers depending on supplier sourcing and time of year. |

Appears to me, IMO, the bracket is the black phosphate, as the bolts are black phosphate. The unit does appear to have remnants of that gold clad under the protected area, but not 100%

Yes, I too need to look back at pictures to verify memory. No body said it was going to be easy getting old. Pictured below is my old 73 car that shows NO gold cad for that year.

Thanks Pat. Here are a couple other pictures Pat sent me that show the bracket with the solenoid removed. You can see the area that was under the solenoid arm and not exposed.

Just to add one more photo that I forgot about, here's a poor shot of my friend Joe Parish's 1972 455HO Formula carburetor and idle stop solenoid / bracket.
Appears to me to be gray (or faded black) phosphate. This is an original 38,000 mile car and engine.

Idle Solenoid Bracket Color
I now own Joe Parish's old 38000 mile car. And yes the bracket is black phosphate coated. I have 2 other 72's that the bracket is also black.
