Wideband Questions
I have this posted in the 'street' section, not much response. Will try here....--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am considering acquiring an Innovate Wideband system to tune the Holley on my 455. #3844 MTX-L seems to be all I need. (I will not be using anything beyond monitoring the gauge as I drive, or tune @ idle.) Or the #3895, for $10.00 more? Would the extra ten bucks get me much or just make it easier to sell later? I trust you guys on this forum more than salemen. Can you offer pros and cons to help me decide? Thanks a bunch. |

You might spend $100 in gasoline going through the tune on the Holley....I used my buddy's Innovate LM1 for a few weeks and we kept tweaking the circuits until it was too lean....then stepped back one or two sizes and that was it. Have not touched it since, but still doesn't get 15mpg.....but it does run better than before.

You need the capability to see the rpm and the AFR on a graph. If you try to just watch it while your driving your going to kill yourself and someone else probably. That would be worse than texting and driving.
You can go out and hit the record button, and perform a certain type of operation like a steady cuise over some rolling terrain, or a full throttle third gear pull. Then you can come back and look at it on the computer and be able to compare before and after results as well. When I bought mine, I got the LM1 and the LMA-2 if memory serves me correctly. That is the attachment that allows you to connect up to 5 0-5Ma signals for things like RPM, map sensor, throttle position, etc. Looks like you can get a Analog I/O cable for the LM-2 that allows you to put in RPM only. |

I have the lm2 I think. It has the 0b2 reader, which i use more than the O2. I work real good on the street car but not real well on the race car. Mabey the leaded gas messes it up.

I have no computer inputs on board. I will have to learn what components would allow a snapshot while driving. Perhaps I'll need to contact Innovate tech support to get up to speed on this.

my LM1 work sketchy at best, was told my innovate you need a rpm log too, otherwise its too hard to interpert the data.

Not onboard computers or anything like that. I'm saying that the LM2 records data and you bring it home and plug it up to your home computer or laptop and look at the graph of your air fuel ratios. If you dont have rpm associated with it, then you cant tell what you were doing while you were out on the road.
If you just try and look at it while you're driving, you're not going to be able to see things like lean spikes when you open the throttle, or slopes in the AFR with rpm at full throttle, or lean or rich conditions in the transitions between circuits. If you are just wanting to set your idle, and just have an idea of your WOT jetting, then you might get by but you are just missing out on alot of tunability. |

Yes The RPM converter is a great tool! I have it hooked into my tach output on my msd dig 6 box, Here is a run from the last race...

I understand the correlation between the rpm and a/f ratio. Makes good sense. Now to see just how much stuff I have to buy to record rpm from my HEI to go along with the wideband stuff. Thanks for the help.

This summer i called innovate, they were coming out with a rpm module that was under a 100.00 bucks, never followed through to see if they did it. may want to give them a jingle.

With the input from forum members, I am more confident in talking to Innovate myself. Called them last night, but got interrupted with family stuff (always a higher priority!). Thanks for the scoop!

The LM-1 can log and play back at home also. You can add the rpm or even add their other data logger for Gs, vacuum, and a few other channels at the same time also.

I use an LM1 from Innovate,the unit has worked well in the short time I've used it ,but Innovates tech advice is hopeless. I contacted them via email about how to calibrate an MSD 3 bar map sensor to the rpm converter,their answer was very vague and I didn't understand it so I asked them to clarify,my emails have been sent back unanswered since then. I'm sure if I was asking to buy one of the new units that they would be falling over themselves to return my emails.
