Default Oil Pressure Gauge Problem (I give up)

Tach works now, clock works now, had to send them back too. Everything works but no oil pressure on the gauge. I am on my third oil pressure gauge, an OEM original from ebay, and two new reproduction ones from Ames. The first one from Ames was assembled with the face upside down (how do you get that wrong, are they made in China????) Had to take it apart and turn it around to correct orientation. It still didn't work. Second one is in now...it don't work either! I started with my original sending unit, I'm on my 2nd parts store oil pressure sending unit now. This shouldn't be this hard. I haven't got a clue any more. Begging for help. Anybody got some answers. New harnesses bumper to bumper, new printed circuit board.

Thanks Eddie

check the sender, is the sender for a gauge or an idiot light?
have someone ground the sender wire briefly with the key on and see if your gauge moves.
Good luck, I know about the brain freeze when its your own car you are fixing!

Is the gauge pegged in one direction or the other? The Electrical Forum is also a good place to ask for help. Lots of great expertise there too!

When the switch is on the needle rises a little. When you take the lead going to the sending unit to ground it it sweeps to 0 instead of pegged out past 60psi???

I'll post this over on the electrical side. Thanks guys

Eddie

That's the opposite of the way the should react, Eddie!

The gauge SHOULD go past full scale when the sender wire is grounded! You have something back-feeding that circuit somehow. Crappy printed circuit? Doubt it's the gauge since you're on your 3rd part there . . .

X2 the printed circuit is where I would head.

As far as I know, everything for the wiring is correct. I will trouble shoot it myself when I get it back home. I returned it to my restorer a few weeks ago to help him draw business for his shop and to get the R.H. door adjusted out a hair so the right fender could be moved out a hair so the right hood hinge would be under less pressure. All that in hopes that it would eliminate having to be so careful closing the hood. it would cause the hood to lightly scrub against the left fender when it was being closed. It required two people to safely close/guide the hood down. One guy had to lightly hold the hood off the fender until it was nearly closed. Once it was nearly closed it had perfect alignment. This should do it. I posted here PY on the electrical forum about the oil pressure gauge and a member named Peter Serio (owns Precision Pontiac) basically told me everything I had to do. I don't think it can be that hard to figure out. There is the possibility that my restorer was not asking for a sending unit for a gauge instead of for an idiot light. I'll be asking him about it when I go after my car next week.

Sounds like you're getting lots of good advice. As far as the senders go, both are easy to identify. The one you need is pretty big and sort of resembles your fuel pump in color and shape with the connector on top. The idiot version is pretty small by comparison and not can shaped at all.

Thanks Bruce for caring enough to post a Pic. That's like my original. Man, is there anything on a "bird you don't have a picture of? Awesome!

I’ll see what is on it when I get it home. It can't be much wrong. Something simple like a bad contact on the connection (boot holding it off) or no ground on the circuit board. I'll meter it out and find it. Thanks a lot to all of you for helping. Everything you guys say makes me think. I appreciate it.

Eddie
