Default Pontiac Holley Street Dominator Intake Fit and Impression on a nearly stock 400

Hey, so like the title says, I found a Holley Street Dominator Intake for a Pontiac 400 on Ebay for $130 in extremely good shape, and decided to replace my existing Edelbrock Performer intake for it. The car is a 1976 Trans Am with a low compression smog-legal 400, 2:73 gears, T-350 with 2600 rpm stall and a Q-Jet on top(72 primary jets, stock primary metering rods, CV secondary metering rods, tight secondary air valve, P hangers) and a crane 272/272, 216/216, .454/.454 lift cam. Also running stock log exhaust manifolds with a 2.5" system. The car is an AutoX car, not a drag car.

It doesn't lose anything in bottom end to the Performer, and it is a way more efficient manifold, and takes less throttle to keep the car cruising at the same speed. I actually picked up a couple miles per gallon too. In my 80 mile drive back to Sonoma State from home, I usually use about 4-5 gallons while going 60-65, this time, I was going 70-75 and used a little less gas, with the same amount of traffic and retarded drivers. Even with stock exhaust manifolds choking the motor off at the high end, it still has more top end than the Performer and revs alot freer and makes the torque converter work a lot better, which is especially good when coming out of the exit of a turn. Also, the motor sounds alot smoother, and beefier. The only problems I had were that the positioning of the throttle bracket posts on the manifold were a tad far back for my stock 76 Tranny kickdown and Throttle cables, so I had to fanagle a set up with the Edelbrock throttle adapter.

I know that people have been questioning whether this is a good manifold or not for a long time, and are very scared of single plane manifolds not having enough low end. I can say for sure that this manifold easily covers the Edelbrock Performer for low end, and rises above it as well. However, I don't know about the Performer RPM or the Torker 2.

nice experiment for you
confirms what our master Holley guru Tom V. has stated all along & not too long ago in another popular thread ,
which what was Holley's goal to build that intake manifold !

here is the reply #45

exact part as your claim or tested
Holley Street Dominator was designed to be 3% better everywhere vs a STOCK Pontiac Aluminum RA-IV Intake manifold.

After careful review, I think the 76 T/A autocross car wil run super, with any 4bbl manifold, particularly a dual plane. such Thecombo can be responsive, and have a great pedal feel.

If you double the engine HP, then the manifold choice will be a useful variable. Ability to retain the pedal feel while making HP is a common goal.

i'll take a shot.

stock vs stock, it will out do the stock pontiac intakes.

modify the stock intake( it is not stock now) and the modified stock intake will out do the stock Holley.

modify the Holley and it will keep up with the modified stock in the right engine car combo. car, weight, heads, cam, intake, carb, trans type, converter, tires, gears, you name it, all have to work together to get the bast out of any combo.

the main thing is stock vs stock. you can modify the daylights out of somethings to get them to work. look back where some people took early torquer intakes and cut them in two peices and welded the 2 rears together to make a modified race intake.

OK, this thread catches my attention because I am building a 428, not crazy maybe 425-450hp and I have a modified Holly Street Dominator that was port matched to the heads by Paul Spotts. This is a street car mostly and some guys dont like the single plane for street use where others say they run just fine. Just trying to use what I have to get rolling.

You should try and run it. The fact that it's port matched is fantastic.

Herb Adams (a former Pontiac Engine Engineer LOVED the Holley Street Dominator Intake and used it on all of his FIRE-AMs.

It was the only intake Herb had in his catalog. I lived in N CA and picked up some of his suspension pieces at the shop in Monterey at the time and saw the white can at Laguna Seca road course.
