Hello guys, I'm still trying to get to the bottom of what is actually the correct starter for '73 SD cars. I've got a lot of great input from members Held for Ransom, Stellar, and, Super Duty D. There's a lot of information in print and most of which conflicts with other information in print. I'm hoping someone with a low mile SD can verify what's on their car at some point to help put this to rest. Let me detail what I've got at this point.
------------------MODEL NUMBER---------SERVICE NUMBER AMA-----------------1108436--------------1108225 FIREBIRD CATALOG---1108495--------------1108225 GM PARTS CAT 76----1108500--------------1108225 To confuse things more, I've seen reference to the Service Number as being the Part Number for our '73s. Does anyone know what the Service Number actually is? And lastly, I've left out numbers from the '83 catalog since they are listed as remanufactured. My thinking is the 436 was the planned. The 495 was the installed factory starter, and the 500 was the superseded in the later catalogs starter? Or it could be the 225 was actually a starter used too? There are a few variations of the high torque starters. Some have one lead coming from the rear and some have two. If any of you have an original can you check if both leads are connected to your harness or just the one. Check the pics below so you can see the two big leads I'm talking about on the last pic. They're on the main case. The three starters pictured should help to more easily identify the three types of GM starters. The crash course lesson if you follow the pics is in the top pic on the far left you'll see the starter solenoid connects at the thicker part of the case. That's indictitive of a low torque starter. The one to the right that connects further up on the narrow point of the case is usually but not always a high torque starter. The last pic with the two leads coming out the rear is a high torque. Clear as mud? You can check this thread for a more detailed explanation. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=691783 |

Thank you very much for checking! Did you happen to notice if it had the two leads in the back and if so were they both wired, or just the one? Big thanks again for checking!

![]() If you do ever get under your car, can you check if your wiring has provisions for both those leads? I'll bet just one is connected, but I'd like to confirm at some point. |

The '74 SD should have used the 1108226.

As an added punishment while you're down there, pulling the date codes would be a big help too. I'm wondering with such a low run if they used left over HO starters? Last edited by SD73; 03-10-2012 at 10:43 PM. |

I defer to HfR on that.
Do you know if 226 is a dual lead too with both hooked to power? |

Don't really know. I got into the Pontiac game too late. I use to be a Chevy man. But, I'll check into it.

isn't that a later steering column? i'm pretty sure i have had a couple early columns with cruise that didn't have the 79 up plastic bump on them.
