My dad was part of that, at Watton. My mom and he went "over there" in '95 for the 50th reunion. He said their money was "no good". He couldn't pay for a drink, buy a meal or even rent a room. ALL of it "no charge" and big "Thank you, Yanks!"

Not just the Brits, the French remember as well.
My older brother is a WWII buff, he was in Normandy touring the area for obvious reasons, when an older French gentlemen pegged my brother as an American after he heard him speak. He walked up to my brother and thanked him profusely, even though my brother was born about 14 years after WWII was over.
