Default Please remind me...Trans Am dash question

I tried search but couldn't find the info...............

I seem to remember the dashes are the same from 77 up to 81 but what's the difference between these and the earlier ones?

I'm trying to find a good one for mine(who isn't?) and seem to have come across more 76 ones lately

FWIW: I talked to a guy from Year One who said there may or may not be prototype repros in the offices and that production is not far off(haven't heard that before)

Vague enough?

Thanks

Don't hold your breath waiting for a reproduction dash, they've been saying that for about 7 years now.

70-81 dash pads WILL interchange, but 78-81 had a slightly different size radio opening,so if you are planning on using a "correct" stock radio, you will need the corresponding year dash.

I think closer to 15!

I also think the radio opening is the difference.

Ya know.. this thread caught my interest as I couldn't figure out what any difference would be in the second gen dashes from year to year... and yes... you guys are right.. it's DEFINITELY the size of the opening for the radio.
But.. not so much the radio face itself..but...it's the width of where the dials for the radio come through.

Many years ago.. I was in the car audio installation business and IF I remember correctly you could use an earlier dash...you would have to slightly narrow the opening for the radio dials and you could use the radio faceplate from a 77-81 and it should fit and look factory.

If you are using an aftermarket radio.... the shafts on those older style radios are adjustable and you could move them out to fit the earlier dash if you needed to .

take care guys

77's and older have the small 3/8" section. 78-81 have the 3/4" measurement.
