481776 is the part# that my GM parts book lists as all 71-75 f body. My book is dated 1978 so it could have changed sometime in that time. I also think that the 481776 is still avalible from GM. I also show that the 480200 is still a good part# |

Fatherandson, regarding the '73SD, it's an 18K mile car, very correct, and no reason to believe it's not an original hose. I specifically questioned the owner about the hose as I then used it as a go-by for the Brewster car.
Here's a GM 481776 hose. It is longer on the radiator side, but can be cut and still retain the stamp. The GM lettering is not the same as 'back in the day'. I quickly stamped a 489867 on it for comparison sake.

....however you have to cut off the #418776 when putting it on... If that number changed, it changed before 1978 because that is the date of my parts book. As I said earlier the 418776 is listed for ALL F from 71 to 75. My book ends with the 75 model year |

This may be really oversimplifying things, and of course, it's based the data collected for, well, two days and 3 cars, haha, but it appears there are 3 generations of 489867:
1. '73 thereabouts, like the one I made the stamp of, yellow lettering. 2. '77 thereabouts, with RADIATOR spelled out, but the arrow shorter and the triangle moved, white lettering. 3. '79 thereabouts, with RAD and arrow longer again. And, it seems it would be easy enough to verify the correct part no. for early cars to see some 418776 on original cars.

I forgot I had this picture. Here is the top radiator hose from a Scott Tieman restored '73SD Formula. This car has been seen on calendars and Hemmings Muscle etc. It appears to be a NOS hose he used on the restoration, or possibly the original hose.
This picture and the Red '73SD TA were taken at the 2006 TA Nat's. Scott had just finished the car. I was having a little fun with the 3rd pic. How often can you get a pic of a Brewster Green SD Formula in the dog dish of a Florentine Red SD Formula?

Yes, GM 481776 IS still available and also GM 480200 (lower hose). I ordered both a couple weeks ago.
I think that is correct though, you will have to cut the length on the top hose. I will have to look at mine next time I am in the garage. It is at my parents house across town. Doing a major detail job. Mine is a 77 400 W72 manual transmission. |

I work at a GM dealer. I bought it there.
Make sure you have your number correct. I saw in an earlier post you had the number listed as "418776" instead of the correct number "481776". Part number 418776 probably WAS discontinued in 1992 if that is the number you gave the dealer. Tell them the correct number "481776". If you did give then the correct number, then go to another dealer because they are not being very supportive in my opinion. Good luck to you, -Doug PS... likewise, as Norwood says, try GMPARTSDIRECT.com Another great source! |

I've been looking over the pictures everyone has posted, and been studying the numbers associated with the yellow 76EX50 that is also marked on the hoses. There is a number after the 76EX50 that I'm convinced is a date code for manufacture of the hose.
My upper hose has: 76EX50 8M04 - December 4, 1978 (In this type of datecoding, sometimes the letter I is skipped). My Lower hose has: 9B06 - February 6, 1979 Build date on my car is February 21, 1979 FatherandSon has 8K24 - November 24, 1978 Do you happen to know the build date of your '79TA? Coolbird has 6K28 - November 28, 1976 Do you happen to know the build date of your '77TA? Even Norwood's NOS hoses have codes that could be interpreted as date codes: 5L18 - November 18, 1975 5F02 - February 02, 1975 Finally, there are other letters after the datecode that I don't have an explanation for. Thanks!

Yes Black, you got it right.
Also, the K in Fatherandson and Coolbird should be October, not November. I think I sent that email out too early this morning!

165th,
Father&Son73T/A was asking about this in another thread so I thought I would add info here. I believe my '74 Formula has the correct (original) upper hose (pictures posted). As you can see from this and the original 73SD hose you posted earlier, the date coding was more traditional (6 xx 3 on your picture. 9 19 3 (built 10A) on mine). |
