dual batteries
I just bought a 64 Lemans project/parts car. It appears to have come from the factory with dual batteries. Was this an option? It is a factory AC car.
Thanks, Don |

Was it built with a 6 or an 8?

I don't know if it was a 6 or 8, need to get PHS on it. As near as I can tell this car spent some time at the drag strip, maybe they added the second box then. It also has a 12 bolt rear and front disc brakes so someone has done some upgrading over the years.
Thanks, Don |

From the looks of the wiring harness with the horn relay mounted on the inner fender and such it's a V8 car, 6-banger cars had the horn relay on the passenger side of the radiator support. Fuel line on the driver's side says V8 too.
Not to mention the V8 engine mount brackets on the crossmember look like they've been there forever. This car clearly had factory air conditioning too. Twin-batteries are pretty easy to do, just add a 6-banger battery tray on the passenger side. Could have been done to assure good engine cranking while racing, although most drag racers will choose to mount one or two batteries in the trunk for weight transfer. Having two up front is definitely not what you want when you're trying to get the car to transfer weight to the rear on the launch.

If the VIN begins with a 8, it was a V8 car. Maybe it was the rare diesel engine option with dual batteries for cranking

This is an interesting car. It had sat for a real long time, still had black Texas plates on it. It has adjustable traction bars which is something I've not seen before on one of these cars. The seller had already pulled the motor, he said it was a YR coded block. The body is quite good, the usual rust in the floors, trunk and lower rear quarters but otherwise very good. The fenders appear to be completely rust free and are one of the reasons I bought the car. The tail light housings also appear to be very nice without any pitting that I could see. Don |

Don,
Sounds like you have a good project to work on! Mine has the same afflictions - rusty quarters and trunk. Maybe I'll have mine finished by the turn of the next century... Keep us posted with pix, etc. Lou |
