Default 1968 FB What's It ?

O.K.
I'm hoping some of our resident 69 owners can shed some light on this.
I was checking out a 69 HT yesterday and upon insepction I was looking through the grill on the driverside and saw a devise that I have no club of what it is.
It is a amber lens/light about 1" round sitting in a bracket that had small springs holding it within the bracket. Mounted just behind the grill aiming outward/forward to the underside of the core support. It appeared to have a leveling bubble.
It looked factory and had power lead(s) run within the factory wiring and ran back to the firewall.
The current owner had no clue as to what it was. Anyone here?

Thanks for any insite.

I have no clue but it sounds kind of like the old style "auto-dim" headlight sensors. My '69 doesn't have anything like that as far as I'm aware of.

I was thinking on the same line, But I don't think the amber lens would be good for reading oncoming light?
I'll try to get a pic of it if I go look again.

I looked at the '69 wiring diagram and find nothing like it in the circuit. I looked at parts diagrams and find nothing. I checked the '69 accessories and find nothing that fits the description.

Jeff,

I've been messing with these '69's since 1978 and have never seen or heard of what you are describing and have not read/researched anything like it.

Hmmm... the only thing mounted to the core support behind the grill on the drivers side would be the second horn. You say that the wiring is part of the factory harness. Could the wire actually be for the second horn and someone rigged up a light to it instead? If so, when you honk the horn the light should light up.

Just a thought.

The running lights underneath the front had amber bulbs, you sure the socket for it isn't just pulled out and shoved up behind the grill for some reason?

Or maybe they replaced it and the old one got shoved in there?

Default Thanks Jeff

For posting this mystery, the car Jeff is reffering to is mine and no1 seems to have a clue on what this is but here are 2 part# I found.
5958846- and the other is
916362
The Car was built in Norwood 4th week in Oct and the Cowl Tag does not denote anything different than the Norm.
Like Jeff stated before the part seems to be made for the car and it looks heavy duty not flimsy like aftermarket parts usually are.
Any clues?

Default All right!

Charles you are the MAN! Mystery solved.
That is exactly what I have, thanks for posting the link.
We all kind of thought that's what it was, and now it is comfirmed.
The E-Bay auction states it is for a cadillac but I guess any GM car could of had it if ordered.
Cool.
Thanks again Charles.

WE HAVE A WINNER!
See now I would have thought that the amber lens wouldn't be good for something like that.

Sheeeeesh, and I thought it was an old deer warning light or something. Great work. Does anyone know what can be used in place of the 68 trans kick down switch? Will a 60 work or maybe anything after-market? Thanks friends. This was a great post about the strange light. < Mike in Oregon >

The same question is in discussion over at the 1st Gen site. You might find some answers at: http://firstgenfirebird.org/ubb/ulti...;f=23;t=005696
