I just switched from Flowmaster 40 series to Dynamax Super Turbo's #17749. It's a 2.25" system mated to the 2.5" mufflers on a '68 Lemans 350. Love the new mufflers. They're quieter but still have some rumble and more importantly, no more resonance. Thanks to Tom Hand for the article and suggestions.

Hey Shineybike, thanks for the update. I am glad to know the new ones are better for your ears! I bet it sounds smooth and good now.

I chose a system for my Luxury LeMans based directly on the EXCELLENT Hand-authored exhaust article. I LOVE IT!!! I am now trying to replicate that system on my other classic car. Thanks a bunch to the Hands!
What I have on there right now are 14" Xlerators by Goerlich, they are just too loud for a daily driver. The 20" Dynomax Super Turbo cases that I want would not fit, but it looks like 17" cases could fit and 18" would max it out. Here is my dilemma: Unfortunately there are basically just 14" and 20" Dynomax ST casings- and not even any 14" casings in their "street"-sounding mufflers (The #17749 20" are "street"-sounding; others considered "sport"-sounding). My goal- good power without being too loud. Healthy low rumble outside, but quiet inside and no resonance, (i.e. what I have on my LeMans). Choices (in 2-1/4"dia.): 18" Goerlich Xlerators -- how much quieter will they be than my 14" Xlerators? 18" Magnaflows #12255 -- don't know anything about them 17" Flowmaster 50 Series D-flow #942451 -- not a fan of the 'flowmaster sound', droning reputation -low on my list Spintech Sportsman XL -- Cult favorites but how loud are they? 14" Dynomax #17731 / Summit Turbos -- "sport" sound; will this be quieter than the 14" Xlerators? Pypes 14" Maxi-Mizers -- available with a complete x-pipe header-back system 16" IMCO Turbo Mufflers #T-924 -- never heard of 'em Is there anyone out there who has had 1st hand experience comparing these suggested muffler setups? Anyone wish to give their opinions on any of these systems? Your imput is mucho appreciated! |

What vehicle? The 14" dynomax SuperTurbo's might be perfect for your application. Don't let the 14" size scare you. The DM is going to be significantly quieter than the 14" Goerlich's, FM50's and somewhat quieter than the Maximizers and the 18" Goerlich's or 18" Pypes Race Pro. They are a fairly quiet muffler with little or no resonance issues but flow very well. you can purchase the Pypes system with the DynoMax SuperTurbos as a kit from PY.

At this risk of getting the boot from the board, the vehicle is a <cough-cough>'69 Cougar<ahem>.
I just wish we had a cool-a$$ real-life test/solutions article like Hand's for my <ahem> FoMoCo car. Edit: I dont know, who IS Steve?... Last edited by LuxLeMans; 06-25-2006 at 06:33 PM. |

The DM 14" superturbo should be perfect then. I believe you will probably need offset/center configuration.
btw, who is Steve? ![]()

Thanks Ccass. Good info-- 14' DST are quieter than 18" Xlerators.
I chatted with Pypes, but they don't have anything that will fit my application. Plus, they said they only sell their systems with their own mufflers. Of course I could pick things a' la carte but they didnt have a clear "prescription" for me. |

You can get a muffler delete system from Pypes and then purchase the Dynomax mufflers from a place like Summit Racing.

I've got a set of 20" Race Pros on a Pypes 3" Exchange system in my '66. They sound GREAT. Definitely a bit more rumbly and crackly at idle than the Dynomax Super Turbos they replaced, but it's a nice ruumble. They absolutely scream at WOT....... I like 'em!

Dynamax Super Turbo's sounds great, forget the x pipes, kills the sound of a good cam, adds weight, cost more. My 2c

I just installed A full 3" header-back system on my '67 goat. I got it from summit and it came with their "fully welded" mufflers. They sound tough and rumbly at idle with the torker cam... and they get pretty loud when you stomp it. Not really the muffs to buy if you want near silent low-pro cruising, but perfect for my car, since I like being in-your-face. Also, I plan to bolt on my roots blower in the near future, so I wanted the 3" for minimal backpressure. No h or x pipe, since once my car has the blower, it will make zero difference.
I have never liked the "flowmaster sound".. I think it is really overrated. It sounds tinny and cheap... maybe that's why they are popular with the mustang guys? The summit muffs sound decent enough, they seem to flow and perform well and are relatively cheap. I personally am quite happy with them.

Alot of the noise you are hearing from the Flowmaster 40s are from the X crossover. I had crossovers on 2 of my cars and the amount of resonance in the car was unbearable and I LOVE 40s. Once the Xs came off I got that Flowmaster tone back.
Injuntom, if you are looking for a 3" original 40, check Summit's "Force Automotive" brand mufflers. They are an exact 40 series copy available in 3" sizes for like $32 a muffler. We put a set of 2.5"s on the '66 GTO we built and they are awesome. Carbon copy of a flow 40 without the name on them. |

Here's my vote for the Goerlicks! 3 inch x-pipe and 18 inch goerlicks. I couldn't be happier with the sound!
First video the camera mike kind of kills the sound....second one will smack ya in the face! ![]() http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...20439913925047 http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...55939939894487

Dan G, I was like you in my flowmasters were getting a little loud for my taste. I switch over to dynomax ultra flow 3".
I went with the x pipes and it sounds ok but not as racey as the flowmasters. I would recomend using the ultraflows without the x pipes to tone it down, but If I do another I will go back with the flowmasters, they just sound better. |
