My "quiet" Mallory 140 is pretty loud. The problem is that I have the pump mounted to the front of the trunk pan, and it is like a huge resonator.........

Get used to it, or upgrade to 3" exhaust . Seriously, even when rubber mounted, ALL vane-type pumps are loud.

yep, thats where i have mine mounted (i ll post a picture tomorrow) i fabbed up a bracket that hangs from the front of the floor pan right in front of the gas tank. i even insulated it with rubber gromets. i wonder what would happen if you hung it from a radiator hose. stick the top of the pump in the hose, clamp it with a hose clamp and attach the top half to a bracket from the front of the trunk pan.. so it will hang and dangle freely...........kind of like a...........well, never mind hhhhmmmmmm. i might give that a try because i think its the resonance that is bad, not so much the pump

I used the same ones between the pump and mounting plate. They helped a little. I have mine in the same place as Vic. I am going to try some grommets between the plate and the trunk next, but I am putting in a sumped tank, and will try to relocate the pump to the frame rails, which should be a lot quieter due to less resonance..... BTW, it's not that annoying. The guys in my car club give me a hard time about it, but it really doesn't bother me that much, especially since I don't have any fuel delivery issues at all........

they are all loud, the bigger & badder the louder. I agree but go 3.5 inch exhaust, & you wont hear it much, & free up some flow at the same time

Maybe I'm just going deaf (OK, the years of loud rock and roll have probably caught up with me) and the 3" Pypes exhaust may have something to do with it, but I don't think my Mallory 140 is that loud (I don't know how it compares to the Summit pump). I've got 2 rubber pads to isolate the pump. One located between the mounting bracket and the trunk pan and another one between the pump and the mounting bracket. I seriously don't hear the pump running when I'm just cruising along with the car running at low RPMs, so I have no complaints.
It's hard to see, but here's a pic of how it's mounted: http://home.comcast.net/~gs470/LeManz283.jpg

Running a return style regulator/return line is supposed to quiet them quite a lot. It is also said to make them run cooler, draw less current and last much longer.

Gerotor style pumps (Mallory and some of the newer Holley designs) are quieter than the rotory vane style pumps (which includes most others). The rotory vane pumps with metal vanes or rollers (most use metal, including the classic Holley pumps) are noisier than those with non-metalic vanes like the new Jegs brand pumps and the Edelbrock pumps. No matter which kind of pump you use, you can make it quieter with rubber mounts. |

Mine has 1/2" feed and return lines (including the pickup/return in the sending unit and it still sounds like a wood chipper (thanks Steve )..... |

The quietest pump available now ($450.00) is this new Barry Grant unit.
The new Holley is much quieter than 'old Blue'. http://barrygrant.com/bgfuel/default.aspx?page=44
