Default How do you fix a hole in stainless trim?

Some moron decieded to drill a hole in the bottom rocker stainless trim piece on the 67 gto I just bought. This piece is perfect except for this one hole right above the gto emblem. It is about an 1/8 inch big. Can this be welded easily? If so any recomendations on who I might be able to get to do it. and how much it should cost. These mouldings are a little pricey and I'd like to save this original one if possible. Thanks Mike

Scrape the inside.
Apply JB-Weld inside and havie it rise out of the hole.
Add a masking tape trap to INSIDE.
Squeege excess flush to stainless.

Spray aluminum paint into cup, dab some into exterior JB-Weld hole & mix.

Re-squeege to flush. Let cure.
------------------------------
Polish exterior flush. As good as it gets without a Stainlessweld&polish.

You should be able to find someone in the yellow pages that welds stainless. They use a piece of brass as a backing plate, and plug weld the hole, then grind it smooth. Check also places that restore stainless trim. They might give you a name of a welder, or do it for you. The technology is there, you just need to find it.

Any shop that does stainless trim refinishing can do this easily. They weld up extra holes (from mud flaps) in stainless wheel lip moldings all the time.
I would choose a professional auto trim refinsher over a generic welding shop, since the trim shop will know exactly what they are doing, and won't come close to warping the molding. The same may not be true for a basic welder.

You can also check with your local welding supply co. They may be able to direct you to one of there customers that can fix it. The company I delt with when I was in business sent me customers all the time.

Another thought, look for a guy who welds aluminum, chances are better that he does stainless as well.

Haven't tried it, but I heard you could install a stainless screw, grind it down flush and then sand and polish.

If you are going to do that I would suggest running the screw beyond the trim ,cut it with a dremmel cut wheel ,apply locktight and back off screw till flush. You don't want to chance adding additional marks in the trim.

How much for a new stainless part?

find a machine shop that does Aerospace work. Should not be hard considering your in florida. A competent welder should be able to fix it no problem. If they do Aerospace they have to be certified.

Anyone that is fairly competent with a tig can do it.
I have practiced on a couple of bent up pieces... the problem is that you need to use another piece of trim as the filler metal.
The readily available SS rods are not the same alloy...(the colors do not match up)
