Default Horn Button contact... forgot how it all goes together

I've been hunting around in various manuals for how the horn button components go together for a 66 Tempest but so far no dice. I know it seems basic but I've also searched this forum and didn't find a picture or diagram. I have the contact plate(?), wire, plastic white thing, and a new contact switch kit (spring, plunger, etc.).
It's been over a year since we started the resto and I just don't remember how this stuff goes back together. See attached picture of the parts I have on hand.
Thanks

May be too big, and reducing craps the quality?

Do you have a diagram for a '64 GTO with the sport steering wheel?

Thanks CT, I actually have that diagram in the chassis manual but it does not correspond to the sterring column/horn button parts I have so I'm still looking for help.

Just did this to my '67 GTO & looks the same except I didn't have the wire shown in yours. The white platic washer inserts into a recess in the top of the column, the spring then goes in, then the long contact into that. It looks like you're missing the three springs that go under the switch assembly to keep it form contacting the column until you press the button. The bolts go in from the top of it, through the springs & into the top of the column. You need several hands & nimble fingers to keep things from popping everywhere, but it finally worked. I have the service manual & can send a copy of the page if it will help

BTW, I never figured out what the small black plastic part is so I didn't use it. It worked anyway.

Thanks Skyhawk, that makes a lot more sense now since I'm obviously missing those 3 "stand-off" springs. I think I understand how things fit together. If you get a chance after the holidays to scan a picture of the service manual page and post it in this thread I would really appreciate it.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas!

I believe that your parts are for a Grant wheel and not an OEM setup. Is that correct?

Yep, it is a Grant wheel and I should have mentioned that but I thought it used a standard horn switch setup but I thought wrong. I checked out the Grant website and it has a diagram for the signature series wheel which I'm using but it doesn't show much. There was another diagram for GM wheels that looks pretty close and I'm starting to think that the metal plunger is replaced by the contact on the wire which is connected to the contactor ring. This is the url just in case anyone is interested: http://www.grantproducts.com/install/FORM5.html
Anyway, I think I'll mess with it until I figure it out.
Thanks again.

Looks to me like your plunger assembly is missing a few parts. I would get a new one from Grant. I needed one and I called them and they sent it to me for free.

Here's the steps to installing a Grant Wheel Horn Mechanism:

Here's your plunger assembly. The plunger rides along the contact ring inside the steering column, always conducting juice no matter where the wheel is positioned. The spring and plunger you show in your pic fit inside the plunger assembly, but you appear to be missing the plunger body.

Insert the plunger into the hub. Notice the indention in the hub for the assembly:

Plunger Installed:

Place cover over hub, feeding wire through fourth hole:

Place steering wheel over cover:

Plug plunger wire into contact base:

Place contact base into steering wheel:

Horn button snaps onto contact base. The spring in the horn button fits down onto the steering column shaft and pulls the contact base away from the steering wheel. What you have now is the contact base fit into the horn button, but no complete circuit until you push down on the horn button and make it contact the metal of the steering wheel. Important: There is a piece of insulating material between the spring and the body of the horn button. Don't remove it unless you want your horn to blow all the time!

Default No need to eBay

BB66-
If you are looking for the Grant Steering Wheel kit, you can pick that up for about $20 from Jegs, Summit, etc.

Beats trying eBay for one part...just a thought.

Thanks Jeff, just ordered the Grant kit from Summit plus the Pertronix kit we discussed on our email thread.
BTW, I finally tracked down the right stop light/turn signal problem to a frayed wire from the TS switch. I was able to snake a new wire through the wire conduit under the steering column for it and that did the trick.

Thanks again,

PF
