The Best Movie never made
Not long ago I re-read the story of the Surfers and Mike Sorkin.
How the story of those guys has never been made into a Movie is beyond me. That team pretty much invented Nitro methane injection and likely were one of the most influential "Digger" teams ever. They won the largest Drag race in History (Bakersfield 1966) against over 200 other Diggers, and changed the sport. Both their lives and the tragic death of Sorkin is the stuff great movies are made of, and if done well would be great for the sport. I can imagine that collecting the Cars and other items to shoot any video at the track would be a great challenge, but I would bet everyone in the sport would step up and help make it happen. I understand there are a lot of great stories. The Pink Lady got a movie as did the Enders Girls, but I do believe that the History and flat out amazing story of the Surfers, would be great for Drag Racing and perhaps show folks why in the 60's and early 70's Nascar, the NFL the indy 500 were all back seaters compared to Drag Racing. It captivated America. The Surfers would be the first ones to say how regulation and cookie cutter race cars, identical other than paint would kill the attraction (At the level it once enjoyed) very similar to what were seeing in Nascar today. Just a thought Guys, boring day at work, and sick of remakes and political Movies. Nothing better than a great story that is also true. My favorite topic is the bonus. Example: Recently I watched a Movie (can't remember the name) about the Guy that invented Radar and helped build the protection network used by the British during the Battle of Britten. That guy pretty much saved the world and did save England, but no one new his name until well after the war, and he was not recognized until decades after. He was even told that telling his wife would result in execution. Great Movie because it was true and told an important story. Beats the hell out of Zombies. |

I totally agree. And that scoop, still the best looking scoop ever.
Here's a great little article on them... http://www.hotrod.com/news/1508-bob-...ies-at-age-74/ Last edited by 6567GTO; 06-29-2016 at 03:00 PM. |

Thanks Guys, really enjoyed the Videos and article. I have the Special Addition
Hot Rod Mag on the Surfers. One of the best. The Story of the Cardboard and duct Tapped Hemi is crazy. No one in their right minds would try that or several other things they did. Sorkin's friend describing his final ride, just shocked me. The danger those guys endured and at times laughed at during that time pretty much tells what it took to do that job. Anyone that got into a Digger, or Early Funny Car or a Gasser could not have thought much about the danger. Just a bunch of guys that loved what they did and lived with the results, good or Bad. Anytime you read or see an article about the "Old Days" make you wonder how so many survived. Board Track, Early Indy, High Cowl Bentleys (with no fricken brakes)and pretty much any form of racing in the early days could end your life without warning. Many of those guys however were WWII pilots and other guys that lived through so much danger that racing was not even a problem for them. Today if any of us were asked to take a full power run in any of those Cars or Bikes, our brains would kick in and fear would stop most from continuing. Just a completely different set of rules those guys lived and died by. They will forever have my respect, and that goes for any of you guys that strap on the Belts, and slam it to the floor. I'm a certified chicken, and on my only run could not pull 4th in my Friends 66 Impala SS, and certainly would not include myself in any of these groups, but what a great history our sport has. |

There were "old" racers, and there were "bold" racers....but there were no "old bold" racers....

The Imitation Game is also a great true story, but the Movie I was referring is
"Castles in the Sky" and is the story of Sir Robert Watson Watt. He invented radar (as a working defense system) |
