Default Heater hose orientation

When I bought my '69 firebird 16 years ago one of the heater hoses was from the head above number 8 cylinder and looped around onto the heater nipple. I have struggled to replicate this since i put on tall valve covers to cover the roller rocker assembly etc and have tried several different methods. My latest creation , a few years back, was to put another nipple into the opposite head above number 7 cylinder with a pipe connecting the two and 'T' off that to the heater. I have since read that the heater hose should have come from above number 7 cylinder all along. What is the correct method? Thank you in advance.

No, from the factory it comes off number 8 on the passenger side of the motor.

I can’t see why tall valve covers will stop you from running a hose from that nipple near number 8 since front to rear it’s so close to where the valve cover ends!

I ran tall Moroso’s to clear my girdle and I had no problems, at least on my GTO.

You might go to a well stocked auto parts store and ask if you can browse there hose ilse to see if you can find someone premoulded that you could splice in with a double nipple. If

Thanks for that. I can't explain why its so close either. It actually stops the valve cover going down properly and creates an oil leak from there if I'm not 100% careful when refitting the valve covers after a valve lash check.

Well then your hose clamp must be positioned the wrong way and that's what your valve cover is sitting on I would have to say!

A pic would help.

Are you using the formed/molded hose or just regular heater hose?

There are options, but not factory ones.

They reproduce the molded heater hose. Have a couple cars here with them. Don't recall where I got them but hasn't been all that long ago. I'm sure a search with various vendors still turn them up.

Ames has them, Parts Place, think Inline Tube as well. But they don't always work as well as the originals, I've seen them kind of straighten out of time.

So people put 90 degree elbows on the head, and think there are ones that even have curved tubes, but it's been a while since I've looked.

You can use AN too, I've seen some folks tig an AN fitting on the OE head port, but that can run into some money, and has it's own problems.

They seem to work okay for me

I've actually never even heard of a problem with heater hoses and valve covers before. In a pinch I've even just looped regular heater hose off the stock nipple and have that work fine. Just not as aesthetically appealing as the molded hose.

The whole key to just using plain old heater hose as I have near always done is to not make it too short other wise you give it no choice but to pinch off.

Just use a longer length of heater hose so the loop clears the valve cover. It's not that complicated.
