Default Rear defogger

Hi All,
Question.
Should my '73 Formula with a deluxe interior, have a rear defogger? I thought it might be a demister in the rear glass but no. Then I saw an earlier post mentioning a defogger with a motor and switch in the dash. I have none of that.

Your thoughts?

George

Nothing to do with deluxe option. Look under the rear shelf, if nothing there and no dash switch...

Order the PHS, if you don't already have it. It will show if you had rear defrost or defog.

I have three different types of rear defog switches;
two I believe are for the grid type heated rear glass;
one only pushes up, then goes back to rest in the centre (it has a little green led);
one which looks like that last one, can push up to turn on, and can also be pushed down - presumably to turn off the heated glass;
the third one is for the fan type rear defog - I have the fan, ducting, and the rear package tray vent piece for it (I believe this came from a 1970 Firebird, which is in part why I've not sold it).

I could be wrong, but I believe that covers all types of rear defog.

An FYI, another "70 only" part. The 70 blower defogger and 71 up version are vastly different. Same switch but the vent register and housing on 70 is a long thin rectangle (like 24x3) and 71 up is more like 12x6. Dimensions are wild guess from memory and may be way off but you get the idea.

Defog = blower motor type
Defrost = electric lines on the glass

Most switches have the green light, some have a red light. Pretty sure '74s had the red light. I believe all switches say "defog" on them, even if they are actually for the defrost.

Here is a pic of a switch I took off a 70 Esprit with the electric rear window.

It has a green light and it says DEFOG.

The other thing I noticed there is an indicator light on the dash that has a defrost symbol. It looks like a light socket from the dash light circuit is what lights this indicator when the dash lights are on. I have not seen that before.

Looking closer the left side of the switch says REAR, and the right side says DEFOG.
In the other post of Bentwheel Bob, his 73 does not say REAR, and the DEFOG is on the left side.

Steve, I answered your question in your other post.

'70 should have had the bulb tube in the back, I believe. I've posted other years here...

1980-81 part. There was a fiber optic that ran to the back of the gauge cluster that lights up the defrost symbol at night.

Thanks for the info guys.
It looks like my car never had the degogger or demister option. Nothing under the parcel shelf and there is just a gap to the right of the cigarette lighter where the dash insert goes.

Thanks for the clarification. I guess it goes to show, even though it came off a 70 Esprit, somebody had already been swapping in newer parts!!!

the fact that an aluminum turned dash insert was in an Esprit* should have been the tip off.

*The exceptions to the rule are 77-80 Skybird (blue tinted aluminum turned insert), Red bird & Yellowbird (both had gold tinted aluminum turned dash inserts).

You are much more observant than I! My hat is off to you! Yes there was only the dash in place, no gauge cluster or gauge bezel. I totally missed it. Great catch.

ha-ha!

We all miss things at times which seem painfully obvious in hindsight
