Code 40A ?
Box 40:
5: Dual exhaust (Pontiac Sales Code 511)
A: Dual exhaust extensions with V-8 & dual exhaust only (Pontiac Sales Code 422)

Column Box 35 and Column Box 36:
These two boxes seem to have been combined to code the tires.
I have not entirely been able to break
these codes. All GTOs consistently show a 0 in Box 35 and a 6 or 7 in Box
36. A GTO could be built with either the Whitewall Tire Override (Code
06) or the famous U.S. Royal Redline tires (Code 07). The same whitewall
tires were an available option for other models, however, the code used
was not the same as when applied to a GTO. This was very possibly
because they were a no-charge option for the GTO, but came at a price
for all others. For now, here is what I have found:

06: GTO 5-tire set, 7.50x14, 2-ply whitewall (no charge substitution)

07: GTO 5-tire set, 7.50x14, 2-ply red line (only offered with the GTO
option package)

21: 5-tire set, 6.50x14, 2-ply whitewall (optional upgrade from std.
6.50x14 blackwall tire specified for any 6 cylinder except Safari)

26: 5-tire set, 7.00x14, 2-ply whitewall (optional whitewall in lieu of
standard blackwall)

27: Uncertain, 5-tire set, 7.00x14, 2-ply blackwall (optional oversize
from std. 6.50x14 blackwall tire specified for any 6 cylinder except
Safari, standard for Safari or V-8)

32: 5-tire set, 7.50x14, 2 ply whitewall (optional oversize & upgrade
from standard 7.00x14 blackwall tire specified for any Safari or V-8)

Box 48:
1: Deluxe wheel discs (Pontiac Sales Code 462)

From John V

Many Thanks Johnta1 !
I used every search function i could think of on here, and couldn't get a hit on 40A.

Did find a post where John told Ron Landis that the extensions were 422 , and thought their convo pertained to this KC car.
Must have been another 64 they were working on.
It did seem unusual that an option would have used the normal sales code.

Figured the tires would be Reds , but could only find code for Whites.
Didn't want to dismiss the possibility of Blackwalls.

There was a wire spoke hubcap option , and didn't want to exclude it as a possibility.
But I couldn't even find it on the regular sales code sheet.

Sincere thanks again

That article needs to be posted in it's entirety and made into a Sticky Thread for this section.

This is the 4th Baltimore / KC GTO in the past year on BaT that either had no breakdown , or the wrong breakdown.
It's a bitch scrounging up those codes hunting all over the place.

I know there was a semi-heated thread on here that got locked - concerning when PHS was sending out incorrectly decoded option sheets for these cars - and then no sheets at all.
I think it was member 63Banshee who was leading the charge.

He evidently did make a difference in what they were doing - and not doing.

This particular car came with a faintly worded explanation , and a semi-blank order sheet.

Quote:
However they may have options on them that are not reflected on the Passenger Car Shipping Order .
That is a far cry from reality.
The shipping order reflects ALL the optional content - that is a cowardly way to approach the truth.
Truth being - they cannot decipher the shipping order - are too lazy to try - but will still gladly charge you the full price of $120 for their lack of effort.

How about just put that in writing instead ?

Don't make it sound like the document may be faulty .
At least admit that they cannot , or will not , apply the effort to decode these 64 Baltimore / KC shipping orders.
More TRUTH and less rubbish.
Just creating doubt and confusion using a statement like that.

I think the Remote Trunk Release was about the only option that John V. stated he did not have a handle on yet. Due to lack of proper original specimens.

I could post what I have, if it is OK with John V?

He usually checks in at least once a month.
Maybe he will read it and give his approval.
It will benefit far more people as a sticky thread on PY , than it did in Smoke Signals.

I'm sure B-man Bart our moderator will provide the arrangements for it.
It was no small endeavor to crack those codes.

BVZ, saw your PM. I would be okay with having the article (in 3 parts) made into a sticky here.

One caution, copyright laws may require you to obtain permission from Smoke Signals.

I have shared pdf copies of the article to anyone who has asked.

It’s been quite awhile since I have added any decodes to what was originally published. I have kept my own records but I haven’t kept track of anything added vs. the article. I don’t recall discovering any errors but I fretted over publishing the work and have it taken as gospel even long after errors and revisions had been uncovered.. But so far, I think the article is still accurate. I addressed any uncertainty by verbiage included in the article.

There are still a number of uncommon options that I’ve never been able to associate with a KC and Baltimore Shipping Order code. But if such a factory option is ever found on a KC or Baltimore build, a pretty good guess at the decode should be possible by reviewing the PHS record and in the case of a KC build perhaps aided by the Data Plate 5 Group codes.

I made no secret of the fact that my research was inspired by the erroneous decodes that PHS had been making for ‘64 KC and Baltimore builds. And I was always surprised that PHS never adopted the decodes once they were published.

PM me your email address and I can send the 3 pdfs to you if you want them. I’ll leave it to you guys to figure out any copyright restrictions before they can be posted as a sticky here.

I think if we just streamline the content down to the codes it wouldn't give any potential grounds for Smokes to complain.
I doubt they would disapprove in either regard though.

Then maybe a small addendum about some codes not included if they didn't have enough known original examples to fully document.

You deserve all the credit and thank you's that will come eventually.
It seems more fitting if you make the post.

PHS should adopt your coding - or provide their clients a link to it once it's posted.
Or create a better worded insert page than they provide now.

Your call on it.
I will send for it and do it , if you would rather have it done in streamlined fashion.
Johnta1 has the full content , he could do that in full after cleared with Smokes.
Or he could just do it on his own.

Johnta1 never gets enough thanks for his contributions, as it is.
I use his website often and ask him to share files all the time, and thank him constantly.
