Default How to verify a real '74 455-SD T/A?

I may have a chance to get one these rumored "car in barn" finds.
The car is supposedely a '74 455-SD automatic car.
When I get the "come on over & check it out" words, I want to make sure it's not a fake.
What are some tell-tale signs to look for?
Will the VIN have a special code in it somewhere?
How can I verify it's a real SD without pulling parts off?
Thanks in advance,

The quickest way is the VIN. The 5th digit is an "X". If it is a "Y" the car is a plain ole 455.

Just looking at the engine though...it is pretty easy to tell the difference.

If the 'X" is in the VIN, you could check a few things on the engine. One would be the intake manifold. It should have LS2X in the casting on the front. Another quick check would be the heads. they would have a "16" in the middle of either head. Good Luck!

Also look for the PVC in the oil cap. Check to see if it's got the numbers matching distrb, and carb as they can be very pricey.

Here's are some links on documenting: http://www.angelfire.com/mi/jamos1/howto.html

If the car's is priced really, really high even if it's a basket case, then it's probably a Super Duty

Default Real SD

Try to get a PHS before you look at it. That will clear up the VIN issue too. The block should also have a Y8 for auto trans stamped on it. There are a couple sites where you can get all the important numbers from. http://www.iwaynet.net/~gl&lisk/1974ta.html Be prepared to spend some time with the car if you're serious about buying it. Bring a notepad and flashlight with a small mirror too that helps to see stuff in those hard to get to areas. Also a floor jack is helpful for veiwing some other areas. Just because the price is high doen't mean its real. Keep all your findings to yourself and be prepared to pay more if its the real deal. Good luck.

The 455 SD is the only engine to use the 490132 block casting number.
Look on the back of the engine below the passenger head.

If the block is out of the car, it's real easy to tell.

the heads will be round port exhaust, cast with 16 on it.

I went to look at car years ago.The scoop had 'SD455' but was a plain 455.Yes the 'X' is the big give away with either Formula or TA. If the engine is a true SD complete might be worth buying because of the engine alone would/could be worth 10-15k compete. familiarlize yourself with the available pictures of the intake and heads ID. Take notes with you and take notes when there even writing down all nos. We can help. Good Hunting hope its your dream. Bob
