Default blower motor only stops if I hold the button in

I have a 66 Bonneville A/C car. Blower didn't work when I got the car so I have no comparison. Replaced the blower and things seem to function properly except when I want to turn the blower off. If I push in the off button and hold it in it goes off but if the button is out in the static position the blower stays on. Does anyone know more about these heater controls?
