The wife questioned me about the '73. She asked if someone messed with the window cranks. She found it stupid the crank stops straight up when in the up position. What have others seen (untouched/restored)?

My 73 TA was power windows so no help, but I'd say that is not factory position?


I'm pretty sure all my other Birds had the handle facing forward when window up all the way.

Isn't the regulator input shaft splined? If so, you can pop the handles off and re-clock them to whatever end position that you want.

I know that. But, if that's the way it was installed at the factory, why change it?

factory error, should fix for wife. Her happiness is better than a stupid factory error. I'd put it at 3 or 4 o'clock!

I thought I read somewhere that the handles were supposed to be at the 9 O'Clock position (pass side) 3 O'Clock (drv side) when the window was closed. Where it stopped when open was based on that.

You may be right. I may be thinking MoPaR.

I did a check in the Assembly Manual and didn't find any reference. The closest I can get is looking at some old Firebird coffee table books from back in the day and I just saw one shot of a bird with the crank in the 8 O'Clock position. I checked some factory brochures from all lines on Pontiac and I didn't seen any clear shots of bird cranks, but I did see a Catalina with a crank in the 8 O'Clock pass side position and another car with a drivers side at 4 O'Clock.

Agree with 4 o'clock driver's and 8 passenger. I looked into this years ago, checked out a lot of original cars, maybe even here. Pontiac got a lot right with these cars including the most natural crank position to roll down your window.

This is position of my 1970 never removed door panel passanger side pic. We have owned since 78. Looks like 10 o'clock. My parts car 70 400 esprit is very original and same position with windows closed but there is a loose tolerance by design and will look like it's 12 ish. I believe if you push it down it will rest at 10 o'clock. my 1st was a guess my error. They both move to 12 o'clock with out putting force on windows arms
