Window crank position
What is the clock position of both the front and rear window cranks with the windows up..
I didn’t note that when I took them off… |

Barring seeing specific references in Pontiac assembly manuals I would suggest 7-8 o clock for the RH side and similarly 4-5 o clock on the LH side.
That's where we placed the cranks on truck products, the thinking being that was the best position to get that last bit of thrust for seating the window into the frame when rolling it up. K

I always position them so my knee won’t bang into them when the windows are all the up or down.

I always put mine so the are facing forward in the 3 o'clock position.

I put all 4 windows down then install the cranks at the 2:00 o'clock position on the left side and 10:00 o'clock position on the right. To me, this looks the nicest when the car is displayed at a show.

This is the kind of question that doesn't let me get any sleep at night. I looked at all the Fisher Body Manuals and the window handle looks like it faces straight forward or slightly downward with the glass up. I checked some of my unrestored GTO photos I gathered from the internet and some have it placed that way but others do not. Many photos show the cars with the glass down and there is tolerance from the window stops and placement of the weatherstripping. I looked at a youtube video taken from a super 8 film when the cars were new and the '66 green car 36 seconds into the movie shows the passenger side handle almost in the horizontal position with the glass down. If I compare that to how I set up my crank, the glass up position is at 7 O'clock. Perhaps some other members will have better results.

I can't remember where I've seen it, assembly manual I believe, but the crank should be at about 1 to 2 o'clock with windows closed. This is so that any road movement that would jiggle the mechanism would tend to keep the window closed rather than jiggled it open. This was the case of all GM cars for decades. about 10 Years ago my friend bought a new compact GM (chev or GMC) pick up with crank windows, they were at 1 o'clock in the showroom when he got the car.
