I don't think it would work. If it is painted black, you can pretty much assume that the rim is in bad shape. The urethane /stain mixture does not hide
any flaws in the rim, it just changes the color and shine of the repro rim while
allowing the nice wood grain on the repro rim to show through since the stuff is translucent. I would recommend buying a repro wheel and refinishing it like I did.
