the two piece knob is just that - the knob;
the bottom half slips over the squared base of the shaft, and a "flower" top piece is what threads onto the end of the shaft.
Later knobs were also two piece, but quite different in construction and function;
These ones are black, and reveal no screw head;
The later ones were silver, and had a screw head to lock it in place.
