If the website is not the guy contact the seller through E-Bay in the “ask the seller a question”. Say you have a lot of questions and easier if he calls you. For some reason E-Bay allows you to give phone numbers but not e-mail addresses. I did this several times with other sellers, most recently in May, but E-Bay policy may have changed since then. |
I would bet there is one maker in china and are the same wheel being sold by many vendors.I got one from Classic and one from the parts place and they looked the same.Tom

Yep, pretty much a given that all this kind of stuff is made in China. What is your opinion of the quality, fit and finish? I would guess that is what the OP wants to know.

I have bought at least 2-3 over time as I think of it,one is on my first gen and the other 2 went on GTOs.I no longer own any of the GTOs so cant comment. The one on my first gen has 2 cracks in the wood. One on the top rung and one on the bottom rung.It has been on the car for a lot of years and just showed up last yearTom

I just bought one of these wheels for my car, as my original was getting
some bad spots in it. The way it looks as it comes out of the box is crappy because the plastic is way to light colored and way too yellow in color. The actual grain and appearance other than the color is very correct. What I did on mine is use 0000 steel wool on the rim, then brushed on a combination walnut stain/ urethane mixture I bought from Home Depot until the color looked the same as the original wheel. I then let it dry for 7 days(the stuff is very slow to dry), the lightly 0000 steel wooled it again and installed it. It is beautiful now and looks very correct. I was going to have my original wheel restored, but the repro wheel looks so nice that I'm not in any hurry to do so. |
gtohurst any pictures??

I don't currently have any pics of my new wheel, but i'll take some this weekend and post them on Monday.

Here are some pics of my reproduction steering wheel I bought from
Ames after I applied several coats of Minwax Polyshades American Walnut stain/urethane I bought from Home Depot. I used 0000 steel wool to prep the wheel for the urethane /stain mixture, then applied the mixture to the wheel with an artist's paint brush, let it dry for 7 days then lightly 0000 steel wooled the rim again and installed it on the car. I think it looks better than my original wheel ever did(I've owned my car since it was two years old). The rim of the ames wheel looked terrible before I refinished it....way too light and way too yellow in shade, also not shiny enough. Please note that the horn cap on my car is my original one, not the repro which has the incorrect grain on the black hub and a bezel that has the chrome ring which is silver and not shiny chrome like the originals. |
yes that looks so much better than the color on the repop. I am going to have a go at the one I have.

If you are going to do this on a wheel you've been using and not a new one, it is critical to use a good solvent prep to get all traces of oil from your skin
off the rim or you will have adhesion problems with the urethane. Also, be sure you don't touch it or handle it for 7 days, the stuff is slow to harden fully. |
That’s what my wife says about me...

I purchased a wheel from one of our members, which the rim was painted black. Wondering if I could lightly sand off the black paint and then apply gtohurstjudge's stain/urethane mixture? Any thoughts? Nice looking wheel gtohurstjudge! You did a great job, hope I can get mine looking half as nice.

great job, GTOHURSTJUDGE. wow. looks 100% better

any flaws in the rim, it just changes the color and shine of the repro rim while allowing the nice wood grain on the repro rim to show through since the stuff is translucent. I would recommend buying a repro wheel and refinishing it like I did. |
