Hot Rod: NHRA back to 1/2 mile, should they?

Great discussion topic. Flame on with the Fire Burnouts! :D

"Should the NHRA Go Back To Quarter-Mile Track Lengths?"

Hot Rod Sez your input on their poll will be submitted directly to NHRA.

I'm not losing any sleep on this one as to any change from current "safer and slower" 1,000ft for TF. :D

IIRC: Current Speeds and ETs now match or exceed those that were identified as reasons to shorten from the 1,320 to 1,000 ft.

Title says 1/2 mile.

Imagine how fast they would be in the 1/4 if the length wasn't shortened.
:)

That's the thing with hot-rodders and drag racers, they always find a way to go faster.

:)

Whoops! There it is!

Yep, looks like my autocorrect FUBAR is wishful thinking w 1/2 mile...come on Bonneville Slat flats! :D

"A 1/4 mile @ a time" sounds so much better than "1,000 ft @ a time" don't ya think?

Good topic.

They appear to be looking at every angle to "save" drag racing.

One area they may not have any pull with is the private property owner situation.

If they cant keep tracks open, people will grow weary of driving hours to race, some even more I see.

Also, should we factor in any new Environmental policy and/or new State laws/regs?

This past year, how many drag racing tracks have closed...inclusive of all associations..anyone know?

A Big Chevy (YB) guy Says to me that 1/8 is boring and...WHAT's the Point!

I've never been to an 1/8 Mile event, and assume the ricer crowd NEED the 1/4 mile. Go 1/4 mile.

Like another class to race on the same day. After the motorcycles I suppose.

hobbygto65 10-28-2013 09:40 PM

All they have to do is fix the tracks, the reason they went to 1000 ft is because a lot of the tracks didn't have enough shut down area. We still race 1/4 mile here.

Anyone else notice the topic link on the bottom of the Hot Rod page?

Sucks about speed world raced there many times, loved that track. Friday nights had young hotties racing brand new vipers and lines out into the street.

As for 1000 ft racing I like that its safer but if they're going to keep shortening it to quell the speed you'll be racing 10th mile eventually. Kinda ruins the sport IMO though I get the reasoning.

Drag racing will never die only the fast car classes will get axed, and your average joe doesn't feel a connection to funny car or top fuel anyway, some day it'll just be pro stock .

Me personally I like the stuff like the yellow bullet nationals. Lets face it though you could get killed running 9s or 10s. It's dangerous and that's why not everyone does it. NHRA has done a great job of helping keep it safer.

Drag racing is alive and well on the streets and that's why tracks opened in the first place.
All those racers from speed world are now street racers. It's a shame really because a driver knows the risks but some family in the wrong place at the wrong time getting hurt or killed is not acceptable.

Wheww: looked it up, I thought you were talking about Orlando speed world. http://www.dragzine.com/news/orlando...ner-ozzy-moya/

Most still applies to Arizona.

Most people don't think they like 1/8th mile racing until they try it.

Its all about the driver and chassis set up, your light and 60 mean a lot.

Slower cars need the 1/4 mile to enjoy the (lack of) speed. I'll admit if your car is slower than low 11's in the 1/4, you might not enjoy 1/8th mile racing.

I'd like to see the NHRA go back to the full 1/4 mile, but reduce the nitro content to limit speeds. (and probably help with parts as well)

:2cents:

IMO - Go back to the 1/4 mile.

As I understand it, the shut down area (or lack thereof) had nothing to do with the death that seemed to cause the NHRA to shorten the nitro cars to 1000'.
I know that there was an issue with the chute and can't recall the other issues but again, it wasn't the shut down area.

FWIW - joe

hurryinhoosier62 10-29-2013 03:16 PM

IF safety is so paramount, why not just cut the nitro percentage allowed, limit blower size and outlaw dual mags?

Alvin 10-29-2013 03:27 PM

If safety is the ultimate concern - simply do not start the race vehicles, ever!
